The Passenger Name Record (PNR) is a record in a computer reservation system (CRS) database that contains the itinerary of a passenger or group of passengers travelling together. The term PNR was first introduced by airlines that had to change booking information if passengers needed a flight from several airlines to reach their destination.
For this purpose, IATA and ATA have set standards for intermediate messaging on PNR and other data using “ATA / IATA – Reservations Interline Message Procedures – Passenger” (AIRIMP) There are no general industry standards for PNR presentations and content. In practice, every CRS or hosting system has its own standards, although common industry requirements, including the need to map PNR data to AIRIMP messages, have resulted in many similar data formats and content across all major systems.
If the PNR primary owner does not provide part of the trip, a copy of the PNR information will be sent to the transfer CRS carrier. These CRS open copies of the original PNR in their own database to control the part of the route that is their responsibility. Many airlines have CRS hosted by one of the GDSs, which allows PNR to be shared.
Although PNR messages were initially introduced for air travel, it is now also possible to use the flight system to book hotels, rental cars, airport shuttles, and train travel.
Duplicate PNR data loggers are notified to the CRS that owns the primary PNR so that all data files remain connected. This allows PNR updates to be changed when the destination changes to one of the CRS documents.
When passengers book travel plans, travel agencies or users of travel websites make PNR in the booking computer system they use. It is usually one of the major international distribution systems such as Amadeus, Sabre, or Travelport. However, if the booking is made directly with the airline, PNR can also be included in the airline’s CRS database. This PNR is called the main PNR for passengers and related routes.
